Like to Hike in Door County?
Like to Hike is an encouragement program for all that promotes healthy, sustainable recreation. The program is in its 24th year!
Collect this year’s pin!
This year’s focus is the Niagara Escarpment and its endangered and special concern inhabitants, highlighting the little land snails. The pin features two little snails on mossy rocks which were designed using real land snails as models, the Bright Glyph – Glyphyalinia wheatleyi and Cherrystone Drop – Hendersonia occulta.
The Peninsula Niagara Escarpment, designated a State Natural Area in 2018, is a key feature and a must-see at the Park and provides some of the best and scenic viewpoints along Shore and Skyline Roads. You can find more information about our Niagara Escarpment State Natural Area at: Peninsula Niagara Escarpment | No. 688 | Wisconsin DNR.
Glacial processes have impacted the Escarpment, creating unique microhabitats that support many specialized species. Cold air and sometimes water move through fractured rock, creating habitats for a diverse group of rare terrestrial snails that have been present since the last Ice Age. Land snails are mollusks that feed upon a wide variety of organic material and around here prefer the cool, moist, shaded sites of cliffs. The snails do not move far over their lifetime, so they can be excellent indicators of site history and conditions. If you would like to know more, visit the Endangered Resources DNR page at: Endangered Resources | Wisconsin DNRor you can go directly to the biodiversity page that allows you to search for specific types of animals, plants, etc. (specifically invertebrates / snails) at: Protecting Wisconsin’s rare animals | | Wisconsin DNR.
