Eric Hyde Named Wisconsin State Park HERO

Each year The “Friends of Wisconsin State Parks” presents their HERO Awards to recognize and thank deserving people for their dedication and efforts to support and enhance the State parks, forests, trails, and recreation areas.  Our very own Eric Hyde was this year’s recipient for his leadership as outstanding DNR Land Manager for three of the five Wisconsin State Parks in Door County.

Since November 2020 Eric has been the Property Manager responsible for overseeing Peninsula, Newport, and Rock Island State Parks.  He hosts over one and a half million guests at the three Parks each year.  He is not only responsible for the well-being of those visitors but is also the protector of the plants, wildlife and delicate ecosystems that call the parks their home.

Under Eric’s leadership the parks have flourished.  Added and upgraded amenities and services for visitors to Peninsula State Park include the new Eagle Tower and canopy walk, a remodeled Nature Center and amphitheater, an all-access playground, rest room upgrades and resurfaced roadways.  Eric is also conducting forward planning for major future park additions and upgrades to trail systems and camping facilities.

Educating the public on preserving nature and the ecology is a major part of what our State Parks offer.  With Eric’s guidance the natural resource educational programs have been expanded.  He has been instrumental in ensuring that these visitor attractions and programs coexist with nature. His focus on natural resources include thriving bat colonies, pollinator gardens, invasive species programs and “Leave No Trace” initiatives.

Eric is an influential proponent for more park accessibility, especially for those that may have physical limitations.   Access improvements at Newport include a new boardwalk providing easier hiking through the Fern Trail.  At Peninsula State Park Eric championed for a trail ready wheel chair, allowing trail hikes for those with mobility issues. He also worked to provide conventional wheel chairs positioned for use at the Eagle Tower.

Eric advocates for his parks by reaching out to local communities, private foundations, and businesses groups to benefit the parks.  He works extensively with the respective Friends groups securing grants for park projects and programs. Our HERO also collaborates with park partners like Nicolet Bay Concessions, NorDor Firewood Sales, Northern Sky Theatre, Peninsula Golf Course, and the Eagle Bluff Light House.

Congratulations to our very own Eric Hyde for being recognized as a Friends of Wisconsin State Parks HERO.  You are our hero too!!
