SUMMARY:2015 Friends Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Weborg Point in Peninsula State Park will be the setting for the annual meeting of the Friends of Peninsula State Park\, on Saturday August 29\, at 11:30 AM. A picnic potluck lunch will be followed by a short business meeting\, which will include a report from Assistant Park Superintendent Erin Brown. She will provide updates on visitation\, staffing\, and Eagle Tower\, as well as the plans for renovation of the historic White Cedar Nature Center. \nThe Friends welcome the public to join them for the informational program\, which begins at 1 PM. Josh Martinez\, Wisconsin Department of Resources Wildlife Biologist\, will speak about wildlife management in Door County\, and how citizens can become involved in wildlife surveys. Park Superintendent Kelli Bruns encourages members of the community to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about what wildlife management means\, and how they can become involved. “We are fortunate to have such a knowledgeable speaker sharing insights with us\,” she said. \nFriends board president Chris Holicek encourages fellow Friends to attend this always enjoyable event. “This is a chance for all of the Friends to get an overview of the accomplishments of the past year and the exciting plans for the coming year\,” she says. \nFriends members and their guests are asked to bring a dish to pass for the lunch. SUMMARY:First Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:On January 1\, Peninsula State Park will sponsor a First Day Hike\, offering visitors the opportunity to start the year off with a family friendly trek led by Friends of Peninsula State Park. Chris Holicek\, president of the Friends\, says\, “Think of it as the start of a new and healthy lifestyle\, for the whole family.” \nFirst Day hikers will meet at the Weborg picnic shelter\, at 10 AM on January 1. They will walk an easy one to three mile route along the Sunset bike trail and Weborg marsh. During the hike\, the hike leader will help members of the group to identify a variety of bird species. The event will conclude about noon\, after hikers have warmed up in the shelter with hot chocolate and cookies. \nChildren are welcome\, with adult supervision\, but pets are not allowed. Participants are advised to bring a water bottle\, binoculars\, and field guide\, and to dress for the weather\, with hiking boots or snowshoes. A state park vehicle sticker is required. \n“We are excited to host a First Day Hike as part of the national effort to showcase state parks as close to home places for connecting people to nature\, promoting year-round recreation and fostering healthy outdoor lifestyles\,” says Kelli Bruns\, Peninsula State Park Superintendent. \nThis year will be the third time Peninsula State Park has participated in America’s State Parks’ First Day Hikes. On January 1\, 2013\, over 700 hikes and more than 22\,000 people in all 50 states participated in the First Day Hikes. \n\nDegree of Difficulty: – Easy\nTrail name(s): Sunset Trail – Weborg Marsh\nMinimum age for kids: Must be accompanied by an adult\nAny restrictions?: No Pets.
