DESCRIPTION:The trail work day will be held Sunday\, Nov. 1\, from 10 am 4 pm. “We’re hoping to get a lot of work done to ready the trails for mountain biking and skiing\,” said Brian Fitzgerald. “Whether people can help all day or for just an hour\, any time is appreciated.” \nThe Friends group will provide all equipment to perform trail blowing\, branch trimming\, rock and root removal and hole filling on the trails. Meet other mountain bikers\, runners\, and Nordic Skiers and help improve 16 miles of cross country ski trails and 9 miles of mountain bike trails in Peninsula State Park for everyone to enjoy. DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Weborg Point in Peninsula State Park will be the setting for the annual meeting of the Friends of Peninsula State Park\, on Saturday August 29\, at 11:30 AM. A picnic potluck lunch will be followed by a short business meeting\, which will include a report from Assistant Park Superintendent Erin Brown. She will provide updates on visitation\, staffing\, and Eagle Tower\, as well as the plans for renovation of the historic White Cedar Nature Center. \nThe Friends welcome the public to join them for the informational program\, which begins at 1 PM. Josh Martinez\, Wisconsin Department of Resources Wildlife Biologist\, will speak about wildlife management in Door County\, and how citizens can become involved in wildlife surveys. Park Superintendent Kelli Bruns encourages members of the community to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about what wildlife management means\, and how they can become involved. “We are fortunate to have such a knowledgeable speaker sharing insights with us\,” she said. \nFriends board president Chris Holicek encourages fellow Friends to attend this always enjoyable event. “This is a chance for all of the Friends to get an overview of the accomplishments of the past year and the exciting plans for the coming year\,” she says. \nFriends members and their guests are asked to bring a dish to pass for the lunch. Cookies and cocoa will be served around the \nfireplace in the warming shelter. \nParticipants of any skill level are encouraged to come. They can bring their own skis \nor snowshoes\, or rent equipment available at several local businesses. “If you \nhaven’t tried snowshoeing or cross country skiing\, or if you would like some \ninstruction\, bring your equipment and join the fun\,” says Michelle Kemp\, of the \nFriends board. \nChris Holicek\, president of the Friends\, encourages those who enjoy the outdoors in \nwinter to participate in this special event\, sponsored by Peninsula State Park and its \nFriends group. “The wonderful time we have out on the course\, with its beautiful \nviews\, is matched by the warm fellowship we enjoy afterward in the shelter\,” she \nsays. \nFor this event\, enter the park at Highland Road\, one mile north of Fish Creek at the \nintersection of Highway 42 and County Road A\, and park in Lot 5. DESCRIPTION:Curious about Door County bats? Interested in surveying bats with a GPS device for ongoing state research? Then join the Peninsula State Park Naturalist on Friday\, May 16\, from 8 – 8:45 PM at the park’s nature center for a free ANABAT workshop.  A brief talk about Door County bat species will be followed by instruction using a GPS tracking device. Weather permitting\, participants will take a stroll in Peninsula at 8:45 PM using the ANABAT device\, which records species data for DNR biologists. The workshop is free but a state park vehicle sticker is required. DESCRIPTION:On January 1\, Peninsula State Park will sponsor a First Day Hike\, offering visitors the opportunity to start the year off with a family friendly trek led by Friends of Peninsula State Park. Chris Holicek\, president of the Friends\, says\, “Think of it as the start of a new and healthy lifestyle\, for the whole family.” \nFirst Day hikers will meet at the Weborg picnic shelter\, at 10 AM on January 1. They will walk an easy one to three mile route along the Sunset bike trail and Weborg marsh. During the hike\, the hike leader will help members of the group to identify a variety of bird species. The event will conclude about noon\, after hikers have warmed up in the shelter with hot chocolate and cookies. \nChildren are welcome\, with adult supervision\, but pets are not allowed. Participants are advised to bring a water bottle\, binoculars\, and field guide\, and to dress for the weather\, with hiking boots or snowshoes. A state park vehicle sticker is required. \n“We are excited to host a First Day Hike as part of the national effort to showcase state parks as close to home places for connecting people to nature\, promoting year-round recreation and fostering healthy outdoor lifestyles\,” says Kelli Bruns\, Peninsula State Park Superintendent. \nThis year will be the third time Peninsula State Park has participated in America’s State Parks’ First Day Hikes. A picnic potluck lunch will be followed by a short business meeting\, which will include a report from Park Superintendent Kelli Bruns. \nFriends board president Chris Holicek encourages fellow Friends to take advantage of this opportunity to be together. “This is a special opportunity for all of the Friends to get an overview of the accomplishments of the past year and the exciting plans for the coming year\,” she says. \nThe Friends welcome the public to join them for the program beginning at 1:15 PM. Jerry Leiterman\, the new Northeast District Park Supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\, will speak about the important relationship between the Friends\, the Park\, and new initiatives in the Wisconsin state park system. Allison Perrigoue\, recipient of the Friends 2013 research grant\, will discuss the surprising results of her survey of the dwarf lake iris microhabitat within the park. \nFriends members and their guests are asked to bring a dish to pass for the lunch.
